The DPP, the international network for media and technology, has today published a report and accompanying data pack summarising the key findings from the DPP Leaders’ Briefing 2024.
The annual conference and networking event brought together the supplier and content provider community to share insight into the direction of the media industry. 36 leaders from 31 major media organisations each shared their three priorities for the coming year.
The participating companies were:
A+E Networks, Associated Press, ARD, BBC, BBC Studios/UKTV, Channel 4, DAZN, DR (Danish Broadcasting Corporation), Hearst Networks EMEA, ITN, ITV, Mediaset, NBCUniversal, NRK, Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios, Proximus Media House, RTE, RTL Nederland, Sinclair, Sky, SVT, TelevisaUnivision, TF1, TikTok, Tubi Media Group, TV2, The Walt Disney Company, Warner Bros. Discovery, Yle, YouTube, and ZDF.
The most significant finding that came from the Leaders’ Briefing was that media companies will be focused on change in the year ahead.
“In previous years, speakers at the DPP Leaders’ Briefing have been reluctant to call out efficiency and business change explicitly,” says DPP Founder & Chief Content Officer Mark Harrison. “But the content market has never been more competitive and complex, while money has never been tighter. That's why the activity of driving change has been unavoidable for media organisations this year.”
This finding goes hand in hand with other important themes that were highlighted - multiple speakers emphasised the need for operational effectiveness due to increased pressures to reduce costs.
And to help deliver greater efficiency and effectiveness, these senior leaders are looking more towards AI - generative AI in particular.
“Half of the speakers included AI among their three key points,” adds Mark Harrison. “Although they saw the potential of AI when it comes to improving efficiency, it was also noted that most AI use cases are still at the trial stage. There are still considerable obstacles that need to be overcome before applications reach the enterprise level.”
