London, UK - 10th December 2024 - The DPP, working together with the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) and stakeholders from a number of member companies including Reuters, Warner Bros Discovery, and Arqiva, has published a pioneering new initiative, DPP Live Production Exchange (LPX).
DPP LPX provides a recommendation and metadata schema for broadcasters, service providers and vendors that can be used to automate the scheduling and receiving of live content.
The schema, based on the IPTC’s recently published ninjs (News in JSON) version 3.0 standard, enables the machine-to-machine exchange of the descriptive, technical, and transport metadata for live video feeds.
IPTC Managing Director Brendan Quinn said “we are proud to be able to offer our expertise to help the DPP team on the project. In the early days of the project, the team discovered that IPTC standards were a good fit for the requirements of LPX, so they approached us to work together. Through a very friendly and collegial but also productive and results-driven collaboration, we have arrived at a solution that will make syndicated news events much easier to handle in all newsroom workflows.”
LPX addresses a need for an open framework, designed to seamlessly connect live production producers, operators, and broadcast technology. This initiative emerges at a time when broadcasters increasingly rely on IP networks to transport video content from events to a broad spectrum of distribution channels and digital platforms.
Traditionally, live production workflows are hampered by manual, high-touch, and bespoke legacy systems. These systems are not only costly but are notoriously difficult to automate, resulting in a variety of methods for advertising, licensing, publishing, and delivering events.
LPX provides a recommendation for exchanging live production metadata, detailing the event, editorial, and technical characteristics. This foundational layer enables a more streamlined, accurate production process and facilitates real-time, machine-to-machine communication about live events, enhancing coordination and efficiency across the production lifecycle.
LPX looks to enhance operational efficiency and reduce costs but also paves the way for a more flexible, scalable and sustainable future in live broadcasting.
DPP Technology Strategist David Thompson said “Working together with our members and partners on LPX has been a rewarding experience that has helped fulfil one of our core goals of promoting collaboration within the media industry to help solve the challenges that individual businesses can’t tackle alone.”
